Project Management is like......

OK, here is the situation. A co-worker that has 4 years experience in my office was transferred to another position, making me the lead systems engineer for his network. The network consist of 50+ servers, numerous web applications and literally hundreds if not thousands of users world wide. The space the servers are in is an office, so environmental controls cannot handle the load, so the government is moving the servers to a new server room. And guess who gets to be the lead project manager for this moumental move? Ding! Ding! Ding! we have a winner in the front row! ME! Now this might sound like a simple task: power down the server, carry to the new rack and presto! Server has moved. Aaaaaaainntt! Wrong asnwer. The network reqiures 24x7 up time (or there about). Not to mention the wide area network is also getting a bump in speed from 6Mps to 15Mps, aka a new circuit. AND I have to integrate a new virtual server package to cut the hardware footprint from 50+ to ~35. Hmmmm. So how does one move 50 servers to a new space with a new internet connection without being down? I am glad you asked that question and when I find the answer we will both know.

Just grab the server rack and RUN REALLY FAST!

Oh yeah, and drop 15 servers along the way, thereby reducing your hardware footprint. But as you do that, you may want to consider reducing your fingerprints on the hardware too. (Gee, how'd that happen?)

LOL! Not a bad idea, IF YOU DONT LIKE YOUR JOB.

I have a feeling all my superiors might see fault in that project plan.
